Award-Winning Barry Design Associates Successfully Merges Contemporary Design With Residents special needs
(January 12, 2007 – Los Angeles, CA) – With the recent opening of Tokyo’s Sun City Ginza East, a 31-story, retirement community offering spectacular views of Tokyo Bay and the downtown skyline, prominent interior architecture and design firm Barry Design Associates has again successfully applied their distinctive talents to create an environment more akin to a five star hotel than a senior residential facility. The striking building was designed by the renowned architectural firm Perkins Eastman on behalf of Half Century More, a leader in Japan’s senior care revolution.
The five-year Sun City Ginza East project was headed by esteemed interior architect Robert Barry and Project Manager Stella Abdoulin who sought to infuse a western-styled, modern, sleek and clean-lined environment into one of Japan’s first urban, high-rise continuing care retirement communities.
With 23 floors of independent living units and four floors dedicated to assisted living, the Sun City Ginza East offers all the amenities usually associated with a high-end hotel including an indoor pool, Jacuzzi and spa offering massage, a dramatic and large ofuro (a uniquely Japanese bathing facility), a two-story library and lounge, dedicated billiards, cards and crafts rooms and an on-site hair stylist. Residents can either dine casually in the stain-glassed surrounded, three-story Terrace Grill or the elegant penthouse Harbor View restaurant and Ginza Bar which offers a 270 degree view of downtown Tokyo. In addition, the property offers an in-house clinic run by St. Luke’s Hospital for the convenience of the tenants.
“We are extremely pleased with the final outcome of this very interesting project,” says Robert Barry of Barry Design Associates, a past recipient of Hospitality Design Magazine’s “Platinum Circle Award” for career excellence. “The direction the Japanese are taking in creating upscale senior living facilities allowed us to meld our creative design strategies with the functional elements to better serve the resident special needs.”
Adds Project Manager Stella Abdoulin, “We approached the project as we would any high-end property but folded in touches that were chosen for comfort and safety.”
With glass and crystal custom lighting that is decorative yet takes into account the residents special visual needs, specially selected stain and water resistant fabrics and a color scheme that is rich sophisticated and cheerful, the Sun City Ginza East evokes a contemporary elegance worthy of a five-star hotel. “The interior is very sleek with clean lines,” says Abdoulin. “With water jet cut marble flooring in the lobby, glass chandeliers and influential, original art throughout the property, we’ve created an environment goes well beyond the standard model for senior living facilities.”
